Cigar Review: Gurkha Chairman’s Select Grand Robusto Perfecto

Initial Thoughts:

I'm no stranger to Gurkha Cigars. Here on CigarScore.com, I've reviewed the Gurkha Royal Challenge, the Gurkha Ghost Asura, the Gurkha Cellar Reserve Platinum Solara, and the Gurkha Heritage. And it's no secret that they never score very high on the CigarScore scale.

However, as with every new cigar, I went into the Gurkha Chairman's Select with bright-eyed optimism. But, after cutting it twice, the draw was still tight, and a growing fear began to develop in the pit of my stomach.

Brand: Gurkha
Line: Chairman's Select, Grand Robusto Perfecto
Size: 6.0″x58
Cut: Guillotine
Light: Torch
Price: $12 – CIGRco
Wrapper: Criollo '98
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic

Final Thoughts:

After a rocky start, the Gurkha Chairman's Select seemed to get slightly better. The draw opened up and I was able to get more smoke in each puff so I could really taste the cigar. I noticed flavors of cedar and leather, as well as that smooth sweetness characteristic of Dominican cigars.

However, there were some construction issues that hindered my enjoyment. And, at a $12 price point, the Gurkha Chairman's Select faces some incredibly tough competition.

Because I didn't love the flavors, because I think there are better cigars out there at the exact same price, and because I wouldn't really want to smoke this cigar again, the Gurkha Chairman's Select earns a CigarScore of 2.

  1. Thanks for the review, just saved me a few bucks. Thanks again

    1. Being new to cigars..I was given one not knowing the age ect.. I thought the same …was not that good. Now I see them going for $4 to $5 each.

  2. Leather? I’ve never tasted leather so I’m not sure how to compare it. The ones I purchased were good to smoke, enjoyable and I will buy again.
How is that for an unpretentious review?
