Tasting Our Way Through the Drew Estate Undercrown 10 Factory Floor Edition

Initial Thoughts:

Every once in a while, something comes along in the cigar industry that makes you go “huh.” And in the fall of 2021, Drew Estate launched the Undercrown 10 Factory Floor Edition, a box of 20 cigars that also includes miniature “cigars” rolled of pure filler leaves, pure binder leaves, and pure wrapper leaves.

Today, if you'll join me, we're going to have a little adventure, talk about cigars and how they're made, and taste our way through the Drew Estate Undercrown 10 Factory Floor Edition.

Regarding the Filler:

The filler tobacco in the Undercrown 10 is a “tripa blend” of three, super-secret tobaccos from Nicaragua. When sampling the filler “cigar” I tasted sawdust with hints of something delicious. The flavors were woody and sometimes sweet.

Regarding the Binder:

The roll on the binder leaves was much looser than on the filler, and it was almost like a straw. The United States Connecticut Broadleaf binder was delicious and had notes of beef jerky and barbeque with hints of marshmallows.

Regarding the Wrapper:

According to “experts,” around 70% of a cigar's flavor comes from its wrapper. The leaf that wraps the Undercrown 10 is a Mexican San Andres, and it's as described, “a Mexican hot chocolate.” Additionally, there's something a little harsh in the rolled-up wrapper, but that's likely due to the fact that this tiny “cigar” hasn't been aged like a regular cigar.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, I honestly think that everyone who is interested in cigars should try to taste their way through the Drew Estate Undercrown 10 Factory Floor Edition. It's not all that often we get to sample pure filler tobaccos, only binder leaves, and delicious wrapper leaves all by themselves.

To truly understand cigars, you have to understand the components, ingredients, and parts that make up what we so dearly love. And in the case of the Undercrown 10, the parts definitely add up to more than the sum of its parts.
