Cigar Review: Macanudo Emissary Espana Toro

Initial Thoughts

Here at CigarScore HQ, we love it when cigar brands try new things. Cigars are hundreds of years old, so innovation can sometimes be difficult. However, over the past 3-4 years, Macanudo has been trying to learn, grow, and adapt to the changes in the cigar market. First, with their Inspirado line, and now with their new Macanudo Emissary Espana (which I suspect will become a new line, too).

The Macanudo Emissary Espana Toro is one of the few cigars out there that contains tobacco from Spain. And, not just any tobacco, 10-year aged Spanish tobacco!

As I pulled the Emissary Espana out of its protective cellophane, I immediately noticed a wonderful aroma wafting off this cigar. The pre-light fragrance was quite wonderful. Another thing I noticed early was the classic gold and navy label or band. Some cigar brands go all out and spend tons of money on their labels and logos, but that's not the case with the classy embossed gold on the marbled navy.

Once lit the Macanudo Emissary Espana Toro offered up a wide variety of flavors I couldn't quite place. Some were of wood and some funky spice. Other flavors were of a sweet yet sour candy.

But even with its funky flavors and well-aged tobaccos, the Macanudo Emissary Espana Toro is almost $18 for a toro. Is it worth that? Let's find out.

Final Thoughts

I was able to smoke the Macanudo Emissary Espana Toro for a delightfully long hour and thirty-seven minutes.

Regarding the construction of the cigar, it was fantastic. Other than the small tear (that I might've caused) at the bottom behind the foot band, there were no issues whatsoever. Additionally, the draw was fantastic and I was able to get tons of smoke on each puff.

The flavors, though, were not what I expected. The Macanudo Emissary Espana is a much lighter and milder cigar than it's brown wrapper leaf would have you believe. I also tasted some funkiness and sourness that I didn't expect. There was also something like lime or lemon, some kind of citrus, that was very light on my palate.

Overall, this cigar was very enjoyable. It was unique and full of interesting flavors, and it was extremely well constructed. The Macanudo Emissary Espana Toro earns a CigarScore 5.
