Before walking into Stag Tobacconist, I was a little bit skeptical. It’s in a decent part of town but the signage from the outside isn’t very flashy and when you look through the front windows you mostly see board games and chess sets. However, at the back of the store you’ll find a small but well stocked humidor, as well as a small but comfortable lounge with seating for maybe five or six people. The staff was nice and friendly but not terribly knowledgeable about cigars since this shop sells several things besides cigars. They have free Wi-Fi so I’m planning to go back.
A nice lounge with a pretty good selection of cigars. When I walked in, nobody said anything until I’d walked around in the humidor for a couple of minutes, then the owner, Gary, came in. I would definitely go back!

When my wife and I visited Harvard over the weekend, we figured the “tobacco” shop on Mass Ave across from the dorms just hadn’t gotten around to painting over the word “tobacco” on the front. Well, we were wrong! Leavitt & Peirce has a solid selection of cigars at a variety of price points and from several different brands. If you’re in the area, stop in and give them a look. However, beware that the price on the cigar and/or on the box does NOT include the ~25% tobacco tax, so you’ll have to add that in before you check out. Too bad they don’t have a cigar lounge too; I bet that would hold a lot of history.
Before flying from DFW to Boston, I walked the terminal to find food. And I was surprised to see this place! This is a very fancy-looking store. They focus mainly on whiskey, and they’ve got a handful of cigars. Regarding the price… who knows! No prices were listed per stick. The only prices shown were for local brands at the box price – $299+. If you’re in a pinch and need to get a cigar as a gift before you get on a plane, this might be an okay place to visit. Since this location offers no place to smoke, and because the selection is limited, and because the prices are probably super high, I’d skip this place.
My wife and I had the chance to stop into the SoHo Cigar Bar in New York this past weekend and we had a great time. The windows were open to the street, the weather was perfect, and it was a wonderful afternoon. The staff was courteous, but the drinks were somewhat expensive. Regarding the cigar selection, SoHo Cigar Bar doesn’t have much to offer. Their prices range from $25 to $60, and they have only about 5 different brands, and 4-5 facings from each brand. If I remember right, they have Davidoff, Arturo Fuente, Rocky Patel, Padron, and then their own house cigars.
I walked into TW&M not even looking to buy cigars – I was there for whiskey. However, on the right side of the store, near the front, they have a pretty decent humidor! The prices were good, the staff was nice, but I didn’t have any questions for them. My only complaint was that the left side of the humidor, the side closest to the humidification, was higher in humidity than the other side and some cigars had moisture on the cellophane. HOWEVER, the cigars were still in great condition. I bought $75 worth of cigars and I will go back =)
This place is great! The atmosphere is laid back, the lounge feels like a lounge; the chairs are comfortable and you could have a private conversation with someone if you needed to. The staff was very nice and knowledgeable. The cigars are priced very well and the selection is massive.
Towne News & Smoke Shop is a terrible place to smoke a cigar. The owner/manager, Andy, is an asshole and the lounge sucks. Avoid Town News & Smoke Shop.
Let me explain. 1: The cigars – most of the cigars are either $10, $12, or $15, but you can buy 5 and save, essentially getting the 5th for free. Not bad, right? No. It’s suspicious and scammy AF. 2: The rules – you can’t bring in outside cigars (understandable), outside water (WTF?!), drinks, or anything else. If you don’t buy it there on THAT DAY, you can’t consume it. I asked the guy if I can bring some of the cigars I don’t smoke today back tomorrow. He said, “No, I have a business to run.” I said, “Even though I’ve already bought them from you?” He replied, “Yes, every lounge is that way and has those rules.” He’s wrong. Most lounges wouldn’t care. Most lounges don’t watch you that close because they’re not douchebags. I brought cigars with me to smoke. I also spent $68 to get 5 cigars and to patronize the business. When I put the new cigars away so I could put them in my humidor for a week or so before smoking them, Andy, the owner/manager, rushed over to the lounge and said, “I’ve told you before, you can only smoke what you buy here, today.” I’ve never sat foot in this shitty place before. When I said, “No, this is my first time here; I’ve never been here before” he argued with me and replied, “no, I’m good with faces and I’ve already told you once before.”
The cigars are expensive. The bathroom was out of order. The parking is limited. The owner/manager is a racist asshole. There’s no wifi. The lounge wasn’t clean – there was ash on the tables and DVDs of porn on the shelves along the back wall. And the business smelled like mustard or pickles or something.
There are 2 redeeming qualities of this place. 1: there is a pretty good selection of cigars 2: the cigars seem to be fairly well maintained Only visit this place if you want to spend $50-60 on a handful of cigars. Otherwise, you’d be better off avoiding this place like the plague. Oh, and you’ll get charged extra if you don’t pay with cash. Told you, scammy as fuck. Avoid Towne News & Smoke Shop in Wakefield, Massachusetts at all cost. I will never come back here again.
