In 2024, Foundation Cigars released a new cigar blend, the Aksum, in both Maduro and Claro. These medium-full cigars feature different versions of the Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. Today we’re looking at the Maduro version.
Initial Thoughts
The Foundation Aksum Maduro Doble Corona is a cigar I’ve been looking forward to smoking. Since its release, I’ve been hoping to smoke this one. The Aksum Maduro features a dark Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper leaf. And, while I won’t hold it against the cigar, mine looked like it had been crushed a little at the foot.
On the cold draw, the Aksum Maduro was leafy and a little musty. Once lit, the aroma of the smoke was quite delicious. The first few puffs were sweet and spicy, but also interesting and delicious. Had the Aksum Maduro been sweeter, it might’ve tasted like one of my favorite cigars, the Tabernacle Havana Seed CT #142 Corona (see the review).
CigarScore:

Brand: Foundation
Line: Aksum Maduro
Size: 7 x 54
Cut: Guillotine
Light: Torch
Price: $19.80 – Adventure Club
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatra
Binder: United States Connecticut Broadleaf
Filler: Nicaragua
Smoke Time: 100 minutes
Strength: โขโขโขโข
Through the middle of the cigar, there was a time I had to retouch an uneven burn. The whole/crush point near the foot was not an issue.
Final Thoughts
I was able to smoke the Foundation Aksum Maduro Doble Corona for right at an hour and forty minutes. And, for the most part, I really enjoyed the flavors in this cigar, though I couldn’t pin down exactly what it tasted like. The flavors were spicy, Earthy, and rich, with hints of something sweet.
Regarding the construction, there were two points at which I had an uneven burn that had to be touched up.
Overall, this was a great cigar held back by some minor construction issues. Because of those, the cigar wasn’t perfect. So, the Foundation Aksum Maduro Doble Corona earns a CigarScore 5.
