Cigar Review: Micallef Grande Bold Mata Fina Robusto

Initial Thoughts:

You know you're a true cigar lover when you can sit outside during a Texas summer and light up a cigar and create a small fire right next to your face.

But that's just what we're doing today, with the Micallef Grande Bold Mata Fina Robusto, a cigar I picked up at Tobacco Cabana in Cedar Hill, Texas.

The Micallef Grande Bold Mata Fina Robusto is a short and squatty robusto. It's got a nice, well-marbled, and possibly toothy-looking wrapper. Once I cut the cigar with my Calibri Deep V-Cutter, the draw was decent and the cold draw flavors were light and almost floral.

After lighting the cigar, the draw seemed to open up just a bit and became really great, and the initial flavors were of leather and tobacco. A few minutes into the cigar and the flavors were nothing special; they were good but not mindblowing.

Brand: Micallef
Line: Grande Bold Mata Fina
Size: 5 x 56
Cut: V-Cut
Light: Torch
Price: $11.25

Wrapper: Brazilian Mata Fina
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Smoke Time: 61 minutes

Through the middle of the cigar, the burn was quite uneven and I had to even it up with my torch. Additionally, the Mata Fina seemed to smoke extremely fast, almost reaching the first label in under 30 minutes.

Continuing through, the smoke was still very thin and unsubstantial. The burn did get better but was never perfect. The flavors through the middle third were a little sour, but there was an odd buttery smoothness that was actually kind of nice.

Final Thoughts

I never thought I'd say this about a cigar, but after smoking the Micallef Grande Bold Mata Fina Robusto for 61 minutes, I wish it had ended sooner. Ouch. At about the 50-minute mark, the flavors became bitter, sour, and harsh, and I didn't really enjoy the last part of this cigar.

Also, the draw was pretty good, but I struggled to get enough smoke on each puff. While the construction was okay, overall, this was a disappointing experience. So, the Micallef Grande Bold Mata Fina Robusto earns a low CigarScore 2.
