BLIND Cigar Review: Foundation Olmec Claro Corona Gorda

Today we continue our series of blind cigar reviews, where our goal is to provide you with a totally objective, completely neutral review of a cigar. Ellory went into this review completely blind; that means without knowing what it is, who made it, how much it costs, or what’s in it. To see the entire series of blind cigar reviews, click here.

Initial Thoughts

While I did go into the Foundation Olmec Claro Corona Gorda blind, I was not literally blind; I immediately saw two things that are worth noting. First, the foot showed filler tobacco that looked like chocolate with a chocolate drizzle. Second, the toothy Mexican San Andres Claro wrapper leaf had almost no seams, making the cigar look other-worldly.

The Olmec Claro is a slightly box-pressed cigar. Before lighting it, the foot gave up notes of wood and cedar, and something musty. Once lit, the burn was slightly uneven, and the cigar was quite spicy.

Is the Foundation Olmec Claro Corona Gorda worth almost $15? Will an extra 2 months in my humidor help or hurt? Let’s smoke it and find out.

Final Thoughts

I was able to smoke the Foundation Olmec Claro Corona Gorda for a mostly enjoyable 64 minutes. Through the first half of the cigar, the Olmec Claro was a home run for me.

In the first third, the flavors were both spicy and sweet. The middle third was wonderfully delicious. In final third, some of the previous sweetness disappeared and it was much spicier.

While I don’t know if this would by my every day smoke, it’s surely one I’d come back to on a monthly basis. The Foundation Olmec Claro Corona Gorda earns a CigarScore 5.
