Cigar Review: Maya Selva Flor de Selva Maduro Robusto

Initial Thoughts:

I've said it before and I'll say it again, cigar subscription clubs are great for introducing you to new brans, new blends, and new cigars. And that's exactly the case with today's cigar, the Maya Selva Flor de Selva Maduro Robusto, a cigar, blend and brand I've never had before.

The first thing I noticed about this Flor de Selva Maduro was its oily Honduran wrapper. This thing is almost slick, and it looks really delicious. My hopes are high.

Giving that slick wrapper a quick sniff, the aroma of the cigar was somewhat familiar. I smelled leather and rich, aromatic tobaccos.

Cutting the end with my guillotine gave the Maya Selva Flor de Selva Maduro Robusto a decent draw with cold draw flavors that were, like the wrapper, almost familiar, and sort of like pine wood.

Once lit, the draw was just about perfect and the first flavors had the sour funkiness reminiscent of a Caldwell cigar.

Through the middle of the Maya Selva Flor de Selva Maduro Robusto, the flavors were musty and funky, sort of like a hoppy beer, and I didn't totally love them. Additionally, the burn was fairly uneven, though I haven't had to retorch the cigar to even it up. The draw continues to be perfect and is the highlight of the Flor de Selva so far.

Final Thoughts

After smoking the Maya Selva Flor de Selva Maduro Robusto for right at 75 minutes, I can say I didn't totally care for this cigar. The flavor, for some odd reason, reminded me of fish, specifically like a salmon filet that'd been cooked on a plank of cedar.

Regarding this cigar's construction, overall it was pretty good. While there were a few times when I had an uneven burn, I never had to re-light or even things up. The draw was really nice and I could get a lot of smoke to fully taste the funky and fishy flavors of this Flor de Selva Maduro.

At the end of the day, this cigar is decent. It's a decent price; it has decent construction; it has decent (if not just totally weird) flavors. So, objectively, the Maya Selva Flor de Selva Maduro Robusto earns a CigarScore 4.
